I get so scared of flying, i get panic attacks, and basicly panic/start shaking from fright throughout the whole flight untill i get off the plane. my longest flight before was 3 hours. What am i going to do if my flight to london is 8 hours! im already on celexa/anxiety medication but its a small dose 20mg only, so that barely will help with my panic on a plane.. help please?

I am pretty sure that the major commercial airlines
offer classes on how to overcome your fear
of flying. Its either free, or for a nominal charge.
I don’t understand your fear, but I did meet a woman
once when I was flying who had the same problem.
She was sitting next to me & we hit some turbulence.
I tried to calm her down. She had to fly cuz she was
a business woman.
You probably have heard this before, but flying is so
incrediablly safe today. I mean there are hundreds
of thousands of miles flown EVERY DAY by airplanes.
And look how few ever have an accident!! I once heaerd
that statistically, you would have to fly every day from
the time you were a baby, until around age 85 before
the odds were that you would be in an accident.
That is really a safe mode of travel.
i would not fly like that, you may tweak out on flight
Heavy tranquilizers. Seriously, you think many people aren’t taking heavy tranquilizers on airplanes? No, there are plenty of folks just like you who despise and dread flying. I take Xanax for anxiety and Antivert for air sickness, the latter of which also makes you a little drowsy. I always get a seat near a window so I can lean up against the wall and use an inflatable neck pillow to sleep. Just be glad you’re not 6’4″ tall and can’t move your legs during the flight.
somebody once told me you actually have a better chance of being in an accident on the trip to the airport than on the actual flight.
go to Doctor and ask for two ten milligrams of Valium. take one before you go on the plane you will sleep threw the flight over the ocean. then do that again coming home. you will be okey. i have flown in many of them. it was fun and still is fun.
my sister gets those too. in fact she threw up minutes before our 3 hour flight to see our aunt. what i did was keep somethin cold on your head lik a wet towel and listen to your favorite music whether it be rock or classical and drink gingerale. those are full proof ways to stay calm. dont take deep breaths itll only make you hyperventilate.
start coloring or try to go to sleep or if you’re with someone play games with them: connect 4, monopoly get a small one, tic tac toe, hang man, etc…
Just do your best and pray.
a shit load of valium
My mom has the exact same problem!
She went to her doctor and was prescribed Adavan, which she uses strictly for the flights. Ive also had to take this for various anxiety reasons and i can tell you first hand that it really calms you down, but you still seem completely normal to all the people around and you yourself still feel normal, its just that magically you lose the worry factor about things and you dont become careless and do stupid things, you just will feel like riding a plane its no big deal, i guarantee it! My mom now doesnt even have to take it, but she carries it with her when she gets on planes as ‘comfort blanket’.
it’ll help you out for sure! :]
good luck!!!
Contact the airline in advance. They often have these day-long courses where they get a group of anxious travellers and talk them through their concerns and reasons for being scared of flying and discuss your anxieties with you.
They’ve seen it all before so there’s no reason to feel embarassed about it.
Fear of flying is so common they’ll be used to it and actually after this flight you might find that you’re not as scared as you used to be. 8 hours is a long flight and once you’ve done that you should be much less nervous about 3 hour flights and you’ll feel proud of yourself for having done it.
Good luck!
I fail to understand why people are STILL scared of flying. There is a backup for the airplane backup and a backup for that backup. Flying has never been safer and funner. Nothing is more exciting than looking out the window and see the Earth below you get smaller as the airplane climbs to 10,000 ft.
But if you are scared I guess you could ask for an aisle seat and tell yourself you are in a bus or something.
You should read up on aircraft you will feel safer. The pilots are highly trained, aircraft have so many redundency systems, all the maintenance is done by highly trained people and all of it is documented. Its the safest way to travel. When planes go down it makes the news because its rare. When you see a car crash its like whatever. You should be more fearful of a drunk driver or a sleepy driver then an airplane crash. I worked and flew on aircraft that were 30,000 hours with wing cracks and bow beam cracks that were 1961,1962,1964,1972, and 1996 model aircraft that always broke down. Not one crashed out of our 80 on the base. There were some hard landings that messed up the airframes badly but not major wrecks. It doesn’t happen a lot at all. Read about it and get educated on the aircraft.
air line pilots went through 4 years of training and aircraft caust hundreds of millions of dollars
i dotn think for that much money ur gonna get something unrealible and for 4 years of training that ruduces the ratio of plane to car crashes drastictly
just think about these guys are trained
People are always irrationally scared.
You get into a car every day without thinking, knowing that many thousands of people are killed or injured in/by them every year.
But when it comes to occasionally flying people are scared when annual commercial aviation deaths rarely top 100.
I suppose thats the flawed human mind for you.
