Alcohol Anxiety Hangover
Alcohol & Mental Health?

Anyone know if quitting drinking really improves mental health? I medicate with about 3 glasses of wine nightly for anxiety and depression and insomnia. Seems to help except for the occasional hangover when I drink more than that. My doctor recently told me he has a patient whose therapist recommended she drink 1 to 2 drinks nightly for her anxiety, so what’s the deal?

thats a crap therapist. alcohol is NEVER a recommendation for treatment of anxiety.

3 glasses of wine daily is now considered to be heavy drinking. it used to be moderate, but recommendations have changed.

believe it or not, but discontinuing alcohol will significantly reduce anxiety. why someone recommends treating anxiety with alcohol is catagorically false. alcohol causes anxiety when it wears off. alcohol increases insomnia as it disrupts slow-wave sleep (deep sleep), increasing morning fatigue. also, you have to get up to pee, which adds to insomnia. alcohol is probably the worst treatment for depression as it is a central nervous system DEPRESSANT. you shouldnt treat depression with more depression.

im not saying that not drinking will “improve” your mental health. but continuing to drink at the rate you currently are, definitely hurts your mental health. so i guess if youre not hurting…..then thats considered helping?
