Anxiety Age Of Onset
I have a terrible fear of schizophrenia-why?

Hello,

My name is Sean McClain and I am a 18 year old male. I was diagnosed with anxiety/depression at the age of 12 and it has stayed with me ever since, more so the former. I attend an alternative education program due to my inability to wake up early. Lately (The past 3-4 months) I have had this crippling fear of ‘going crazy’ and I suppose an illness that embodies this fear is Schizophrenia.

My symptoms lately have been the following:

Depression
Anxiety
Insomnia
Withdrawn from family, closer to friends
Racing thoughts
Derealization/Depersonalization
Overwhelming fear of hallucinating

I still have the drive to attend college, and I go to the gym 5 times a week and I have many friends. I’m just tired of these oppressive thoughts!

And a couple of ending questions:

Are those who are in the onset-phase of shizophrenia aware that they are becoming ill?

Are these symptoms of OCD/GAD?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

-Sean

You don’t have the clinical criteria for schizophrenia. In order to be diagnosed you must have two or more of the following:
delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior and/or negative symptoms(flat affect, alogia, avolition)

Paranoia associated with schizophrenia tends to be a feeling that people are out to get you.

It sounds like you are having symptoms of depression and anxiety. If these fears are interfering with your life, you may also have a phobia. (seek medical advice)

I am a music therapist who works with schizophrenic patients daily. Although I cannot diagnose, from what you said you don’t meet the DSM criteria for schizophrenia .
