Anxiety Avoidance

Tips for Overcoming Anxiety

Everyone has those moments where they feel a little anxious. Sometimes, the reason is known, while other times it is more difficult to trace the feelings back to a specific cause. If those feelings only come every now and then, it is pretty easy to deal with them. For some, people, however, overcoming anxiety is an almost daily struggle.

For some, it is the fear of social situations, for other it is about a possible disaster, such as an accident, others have obsessive anxiety about the safety of their children. While having some level of concern about each of those things is natural, for some people, the fear is nearly constant. It nags at them all of the time. It causes some people to act irrationally, and put one aspect of their life in danger in order to feed the anxiety.

For example, one woman would sneak away from her job every day at 3:00 to go check on her older teenage children. She had no real reason to think her children were in danger, but each afternoon, she would be overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety. Talking to them on the phone would not do. She had to see them. Naturally, this could have resulted in serious consequences at her place of employment, but she could not stop herself. She was letting her anxiety overtake other aspects of her life.

Whatever the source or focus of the anxiety, there are ways that you can work to deal with it. Overcoming anxiety is sometimes possible without the help of a professional, but that really depends on the intensity of the problem.

Here are some tips for overcoming anxiety.

Avoid Triggers

If whatever is causing the anxiety has a trigger, you need to avoid it. For example, if your anxiety is about crime in your city, then you may need to stop watching the evening news. Whatever is a trigger for your anxiety should be avoided.

Meditation/Prayer

Many find that starting their day with meditation and/or prayer can lessen the feelings of anxiety. For some, it is knowing that the situation is the hands of God. For others, just reciting positive affirmations is enough to keep some of the fear at bay. Aim for at least fifteen minutes in the morning and fifteen minutes in the evening.

Therapy/Medication

For some with a more severe problem, overcoming anxiety may involve seeking professional help. Seeing a therapist may help you isolate the source of your anxiety. Doing this can sometimes help bring it under control. A therapist will also be able to work on techniques that are geared specifically for you. You will be able to test various methods of dealing with your fear until you find a solution that works for you.

For some, this may mean medication. Keep in mind that medication should only be considered for severe cases of anxiety. There are side effects to most prescription medications, so you should consider this a measure of last resort.

Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Some have been able to work toward overcoming anxiety by simply making healthier lifestyle choices. Getting enough sleep, eating right and adding exercise to your daily routine may help reduce the intensity of your anxiety.

You do not have to live with your feelings of anxiety. Instead, find a solution that will work for you. You do not have to let feelings of fear control your decisions. Take control today.
