Anxiety By Black Eyed Peas

Could paranoia be a symptom of anxiety?
I’m in the tenth grade, and I take a psychology class at my high school. For one assignment we have to choose a mental illness and then pick a song that has lyrics that are relevant (relative?) to that mental illness. I chose anxiety as my mental illness, and for my song I chose Anxiety by the Black Eyed Peas. In the song, he’s talking about paranoia consuming him. We have to analyze the lyrics and write about how they relate to the mental illness we have chosen. I can’t find anywhere that paranoia is a symptom or a part of anxiety. I don’t want to use the song if I can’t relate it to anxiety =P Does anyone know if it is or not?
You hear paranoia more as a symptom of schizophrenia or even OCD rather than generalized anxiety disorder, but the thing about psychiatric disorders is that they often overlap and people will have OCD or schizophrenia but anxiety is oftentimes present as a feature of that disorder. And anxiety is often the trigger for the other thoughts and behaviors. So when a person has paranoia, it’s usually accompanied by the thought that they are being persecuted or in some way in danger. Like if someone thinks that the CIA is reading their mind, they may cover their walls in foil and get rid of the telephone. They may be schizophrenic, but if the anxiety about their situation wasn’t present, they wouldn’t be worried about the CIA reading their thoughts. There are some people who have delusions that don’t involve worry or thoughts of persecution or danger, but many of them do.
So yes, paranoia is caused by anxiety, but it’s usually caused by other disorders rather than just generalized anxiety disorder.
By the way, I had really bad anxiety from the time I was like 15. I was on a million different meds and therapies to treat my anxiety and nothing really worked. About a year and a half ago I found out that I had celiac disease (gluten intolerance) because of some other symptoms. When I went gluten free, my anxiety disappeared in less than a week and never came back. It turns out that anxiety is the number one symptom of celiac disease. The reason it works like that is that the gluten damages your intestines. Most of the serotonin in your body is located in your intestines, so if they’re damaged, they can’t use the serotonin properly causing all kinds of mental disorders. They did a study of schizophrenic patients and they found that something like 80% of them had a gluten allergy and when they put them on a gluten free diet many of them improved dramatically. I have a bachelors in psychology and it makes me really sad that these studies (and there are many) aren’t really being looked at by the medical community. There are a lot of people that are suffering.
I don’t know if you even care, but I thought it was interesting! Hope this helps!
