Is separation anxiety common at 21 months?

My son has always preferred having me with him all the time (always been slightly clingy, I suppose); have to join in on all his activities and vice versa. Now, at 21 months, I can’t do anything. e.g: Dad tries to keep him busy while I’m in the shower, but he cries until I’m out and then I just have to pick him up again. Is this normal separation anxiety or should I be worried?

seperation anxiety peeks between 18mths and 2yrs. So long as you remain understanding, sensitive and aware of your childs needs during this phase, it will pass quickly.
If you try to teach a child out of their anxieties by giving them more time away from you, it acutally builds more anxiety and prolongs their independence. Shower your baby with attention and assurance that you love them and always come back.
Play A LOT of peek-a-boo. Esp from through door ways from other rooms. It will teach him that you love him, and are happy to play/interact with him even when you are busy doing other things, and that you will always, always come back.

Crying while you are in the shower can be over come by showering with him! Or having daddy and son play in the bathroom while mummy showers. Or leave the bathroom door open.
Instead of picking him up when he wants you, ruffle his hair and play games with him like chasey or tickling. It’s good to find a way to comfort and reassure your son that doesn’t involve being carried or picked up. At 21mths he must be beginning to get heavy!
