Anxiety For Dummies

Smoking And Coping With The Related Issues
You might want to quit smoking more than any other habit, and you should strive for that. But, you might not know where to turn to get the required help. If you are like other smokers that have tried nicotine patches, nicotine gums, and hypnosis you might find yourself right there back in the clutches of tobacco addiction. You know very well that your habit is one of an unhealthy one. But, you are afraid to give up your support received from smoking because you fear that your emotional distress will worsen and you might be thrown out of balance; and you just do not know whether you will be able to cope with it. You know it is unhealthy to smoke, but it does not seem to stop at all.
It is unfortunate that most of the time, smoking cessation programs fail to address the root cause of nicotine addiction. Not only that, they also fail in ninety percent of the cases at any given time. There are better solutions for overcoming a person’s nicotine addiction; those that do not include nicotine patches, nicotine gum, hypnosis, psychoactive drugs or some other nonsense. As with every type of behaviour that is deemed habitual, smoking also is a matter of choice.
People generally fall into one of the following two categories. One is the category of individuals who occasionally enjoy a cigar or tobacco cigarette socially. The other is the category of individuals that smoke in the hope of alleviating their emotional distress and anxiety levels. Although there are serious health risks that are to be considered when smoking, individuals that belong to the first category are by and large capable of walking away from it without having much difficulty whatsoever. The second category that represents smokers who have become dependent on cigarette smoking in order to alleviate their emotional problems and anxiety are a little bit difficult to achieve smoking cessation, unless they identify and remove the root cause.
All people are created equal, but for the greater understanding regarding the dangerous aspects, smokers would fall into the medical community’s general definition of nicotine or tobacco addicts. Most of the well known physicians, therapists, hypnotists, medical counsellors and smoking cessation specialists or experts would have you believe that the habit of smoking is sourced by a chemical co-dependence, and that it constitutes a learned behaviour. But, contrary to that theory, many believe that the root cause of tobacco addiction is the compelling need to mask one’s emotional distress or pain.
A majority of these emotional issues have their roots in the negative patterns and aspects of family relationship dysfunction; and smoking is no exception to this pattern or rule. Even though, when it comes to this addiction, the primary type of emotional or psychological distress involved is anxiety. In many ways than one, smoking is used as a shield or coping mechanism by people that are nervous or anxious about their families, job, relationships or even their financial well being.
