Anxiety High Blood Sugar

terrified about donating blood next week for the first time?
hey guys im 17 and my school is having a blood drive next week. i decided to sign up today, but i am sooo scared to give blood. i think that i would meet all the qualifications though to give blood? i weigh over 110 pounds and i’m old enough, but i just HATE needles and faint real easily. my blood sugar also drops real easily. but i plan on eating a big breakfast and even eating a quick snack before i go. i also have anxiety though which causes me to have high blood pressure and tachycardia. will they still let me donate?? my blood pressure can get really high sometimes from anxiety so im kinda scared they might not let me if its too high.. or my pulse is too fast? i want to donate, i’m just scared and really don’t wanna pass out! ughh sorry for all the rambling.. haha
Having a needle inserted for donating blood is actually very different to having an injection. I’ve always thought that it hurts far less donating blood than having a tiny little jab in the arm.
The jab on your finger actually tends to hurt more xD
I’m lucky, i’ve never been afraid of needles and I was really eager to become a donor, i’ve been unable to on many occasions though through illness ![]()
When you go you have to fill out a form with your medical history, I don’t believe that there is anything on the form about blood pressure but when the nurse interviews you about the form it’s probably best just to mention that, I don’t think it would be a problem though.
Other than infectious diseases their main concern is you level of blood iron so eating iron rich foods to boost the content is advisable in the week leading up to it.
Yes make sure you eat a good meal before you go because I won’t lie, there are sometimes complications. I went once without eating much and having been on my feet all day. I almost passed out on the bed about halfway through but the nurses are very good, if there’s a problem then just mention it and they often sit with you anyway and talk just to make sure you’re ok. So while things can go wrong, don’t worry, when they do there are a lot of caring professionals there to help.
It’s very rare that someone actually passes out during the doning itself, the problem is when people try to rush off too quickly afterwards, they don’t sit and rest the advised time. They misjudge their own strength and will often suddenly feel dizzy or strange when they’re a little way away. It’s best to go with a friend the first few times, just to be sure.
