Anxiety Mindfulness
Is it possible for Prozac to cause anxiety?

I was first put on prozac the first year of college to help with social anxiety and depression, and took 2mg a day for a year. I didn’t feel like I had any benefit from it, and in fact, felt MORE depressed than before I took prozac. I stopped taking it in January of this year and felt pretty great until I started to get anxiety from an extremely stressful living situation.

Now I’ve been on 30mg of Prozac a day for 4+ months, and I feel like my anxiety is WORSE! And I have also been eating better, exercising more, taking a multivitamin, doing cognitive behavioral therapy, and practicing mindfulness, but I still feel VERY anxious 24/7 and also feel like a spaced-out, drugged-up zombie.

Is it possible that prozac could be causing this?? I have made a ton of positive changes to help combat my anxiety and it seems like the only thing this could be is a bad reaction to Prozac…

Yes, your anxiety could be a side-effect of Prozac. I suffer from extreme anxiety and panic attacks and I also suffered from depression. My doctor put me on Prozac and it made my anxiety worse so I ended up switching medications.

Contact your doctor, and let him know about these symptoms and tell him your concerns about Prozac. I’d consult with him first, he may introduce a medicine to work with the Prozac or he may want to switch medications.
