I am 23 and being charged with reckless driving, driving under the influence and leaving the scene of accident?

I was in an accident in December 2009 while udner the influence of my prescription medication for depression and anxiety and I was charged with reckless driving, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident. I hit a car and have no memory of what happened at all. None what so ever. The police said they would drop all the charges against me but than I got a summons with the charges on it and I have a court date for May 5th.. I went to see a lawyer this morning and he’s charging too much and I can’t afford a lawyer. How much trouble did I get myself into exactly. What kind of penalties do I face. I live in Montreal/Canada. And it’s my first time ever that I am being criminally charged

The fact that these were prescribed medications, and the reason for their prescription is irrelevant.
In any state that has a DUI/DWI law, it is a strict liability offense. That means that if you were intoxicated/altered, and you were behind the wheel, you are guilty. The implications of this vary from state to state, as do the alternative punishments. Your memory of the incident is similarly irrelevant, except to the extent that the officers elicited testimony from you while you were under the influence of the medications.

Also, if they offered you reduced punishment or citation in exchange for further information or admission, they are bound to it.

You DEFINITELY should speak to an attorney. Explain your financial situation, and ask what payment arrangements can be made. Sometimes, they can get costs back from the State. Also, there may be public defenders available who can take your case. Call the Court and find out.
