Anxiety Online Therapy

Is it true that ppl with anxiety would rather risk loneliness….?
forever than to be close to someone who they feel may eventually hurt them? I know a 17 yr old guy who has anxiety and I think Avoidant Personality Disorder and although he is very comfortable with online “friendships” chatting and such he refuse to progress to talking on a phone or even sending much for pics. He hates being lonely so therefore spends more than 12 hrs a day in a chat room yet he doesn’t want to put himself out there to possibly feel something real. Is this common to these illnesses? He is also depressed but that is probably a side affect of being isolated. He used to talk to me on the phone but got scared when we got too close so now he won’t anymore. Will he get over this? He is not on meds or going to therapy. What kind of future can he expect? Thanks
People are social animals by nature but sometimes, with an illness, the social atmosphere can be very difficult to handle.
Medications help with the anxiety, cognitive therapy helps with how a person thinks – learn what things will trigger depression or anxiety, develope coping skills for different situations, avoid some things, have safety measures you can take if you feel depression or anxiety starting, learning to have ‘safe’ people you can trust and being brave enough to take little steps towards having as normal a life as possible. Counseling with a really therapist is key to learning these skills and then go on in your life utilizing them.
Medications can be very helpful and not won’t necessarily be forever. There are also alot of homeopathic and natural medicine that can done instead of the heavy duty anti-depressants and anit-anxiety meds that are usually perscribed which have lots of nasty side effects.
Your friend needs to get some help or his parents need to get him to accept some help, so he can have a better quality of life. Just hiding and playing it safe won’t get anyone anywhere, except to being unhappy.
Your friend has to be willing to take and do things that will help diminish his problems, or his parents can force him or hopefully talk him into getting and following through with help.
