Anxiety Poetry
How do you speak with passion (in giving poetry)?

I’m very meek and was a bit intimidated, my teacher started speaking loudly and boldly when he talked. My speech is up on Oct. 30th, and I’m afraid that I’ll do bad since there’s only 3 speeches (2 since one doesn’t count).

I’m not exactly sure what to write about either, though I’m think about speaking about my social anxiety or how people criticize me for liking certain things (philosophy, art as a career).

Your question is a bit confusing in as much as you speak of poetry and then use the term speeches. I will attempt to contribute information that will benefit both.

Whatever the subject, the main course for you to take is to practice, practice, practice – out loud. Learn where the emphasis is and experiment with different voice inflections until the idea you wish to express is clear and gives the impression you wish. Do not speak too rapidly. Breathe deep at least three times before your public appearance and if you have practiced enough you will scarcely need to read – you will feel the words. Even if you have “butterflies”, breathing and slowing down is key to great delivery and accenting the correct phrases. If you have not tried meditation exercises, these would be most helpful to relieve the anxiety. You can get many of these on youtube.

Is this a speech class? Poetry reading class? If you are writing your speech, may I suggest instead of speaking on how people react to your interests, perhaps explain the value you gain from your interests and you may influence others to share your experiences and open new horizons for them. Inspire them. I would personally rather be inspired by a speech than hear of someone’s complaints about others. Turn your negatives into positives. You are what you think.

Your idea to write about your anxiety could be effective if you can actually develop a speech from this. I am having difficulty figuring out how much material this will fill in a speech. How many minutes should this speech be? Other subjects to consider are related to your interests, hobbies, even an event in your life. Add some humor where you can, pathos is good also. But inspire someone in your audience to act upon something you have shared and you are a success.

I wish you much success in your public appearance. You can do this and you can master the techniques. Reading aloud is a great exercise for life. If you find this difficult, pretend you are reading to your friend, your lover or even your dog. You would be surprised how this exercise strengthens your lungs and aids in breathing and builds confidence.

If you are still anxious, move into a fantasy where you envision you are a natural public speaker and take on the role. As long as you practice in this way, you will be successful. Many of us still get “butterflies” when we need to speak in front of others but if you will remember to take deep breaths, just go out there and do it. Your knees may feel weak, you may not recall a thing you said or did – it may be a blur, but bet you do much better than you ever imagined.

Just do it!!

William Butler Yeats, whom many consider this century’s greatest poet, began as a bard of the Celtic Twilight, reviving legends and Rosicrucian symbols. By the early 1900s, however, he was moving away from plush romanticism, his verse morphing from the incantatory rhythms of “I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree” into lyrics “as cold and passionate as the dawn.” At every stage, howev…
