Anxiety Support Network

Do people finish graduate school long-distance?
I’m in the first year of a 3yr graduate program in Alaska, I love my thesis and really want to take advantage of the unique opportunities I’m being given, however I have developed severe anxiety and depression from the extended isolation. I am in therapy but have no support network in AK.
I really want to complete my program (I don’t want to take a leave of absence) and will be finished with all my required courses shortly, but will still have 1.5 years left (during which I’ll be writing my thesis). Since I won’t be attending classes I’m hoping I could move back to CA at that time and make occasional trip to AK as needed.
Obviously this is something I need to discuss with my department, but is finishing graduate school from long distance something that people do? Has anyone heard of someone doing this?
It is probable that you will be able to go home to work on your thesis. However the school may require you to come back periodically to be with your advisor. Also, by doing this you will be giving up help that your mentor has available to him for you.
