Anxiety Symptoms Dogs
I think my dog has separation anxiety? Symptoms?

I think my dog has separation anxiety if I even leave the room to go the bathroom or something she follows me. And if I the door she sits at it and whines until i open it. If we put her into room when go to the store or something she stands and whines. If I am sitting on the couch watching tv she has to be right beside me. WHAT IS HER ISSUE! IT IS SO ANNOYIG CAUSE HER WINE IS REALLY HIGH PITCHED AND LOUD! HOW TO I TREAT IT!??! i think i am going crazy too

The DAP may be helpful, but I would spend time and energy into teaching your dog not be anxious when you are not around.

To do this, you need to practice some tough love. It will be hard at first, but will pay off eventually! Just stay patient and consistent.

First, I’m sorry to tell you that you have allowed your dog to become this way. Dog’s think differently than humans, and you have to start thinking like a dog. They think in term’s like “when i do this….i get this….” For example, your dog has learned that if she whines long enough, he will eventually get to be with you. You are rewarding her whining, and so she doesn’t understand that she’s doing anything wrong. You are actually encouraging her to freak out when you are not around because you give in. I don’t like telling you this, but the worst thing you can do is allow a dog to whine for a long time, and then give in and let her out. This teaches the dog to keep on whining – because eventually you are going to give in.

So now that you understand the problem a little better – here is what you can do.

Start by putting your dog in her room, along with a shirt or something that has your smell on it, don’t make a big deal about leaving, just put her in there, drop the shirt, and walk out – it is important that you don’t give her one last pet, or make eye contact. Leave the room, and stand behind the closed door for only a few seconds, then go back in the room, and do not make a big deal about your return. Don’t make eye contact, and don’t pet. Then, leave the room again, again – no pets, no talking to her, no eye contact and return after a few seconds.

Eventually, you can start staying out of the room for longer periods of times. But remember – don’t make a big deal about leaving or returning. This means no talking to the dog, no eye contact, and no petting.

Also very important – never, ever let your dog out if she is whining. If she is whining for a while, wait until she stops for 30 seconds or something, and then let her out.

Good luck!!! I hope this helps.
