Tyson&Chino asked:
Considering that millions of people suffer from SAD to one extent or another, would a person who has mild social anxiety (they are functional, don’t suffer from panic attacks and do not need medication) be allowed to join the Army?
I mean, what are the chances that there are people in the Army with social anxiety disorder considering that there are more than 19 million Americans who have SAD?

Yes. Just don’t tell them you have it.
If you can show up, pass the physical and the other tests they give you, you can get in.
I was in the army long ago. I think they may have asked me about psychiatric treatment and all that. I had indeed seen a psychologist about this and that, and I just told them that I had seen a psychologist about some personal problems. They went ahead and took me in.
If they don’t ask you about it, don’t bring it up. If you have no record of it, don’t bring it up even if they do ask you.
I have a mild case and I did join the Army back in 1989.
If you were diagnosed wth it, I would bring it up to your recruiter. If not, then you should have nothing to worry about it.
It is different for each person, after all it is up to the recruiter to decide. I recommend you tell him/ her about it though – don’t try and hide it. It may backfire badly. Other than that, I don’t think it will be an issue (unless it stops you from doing your job, which I doubt). If you have any questions feel free to ask me as I have already made some friends in the army and I could ask them (one is a recruiter himself – too bad I met him after I finished the process).
