Generalized Anxiety Disorder Symptoms: What To Look For

Figuring Out Your Generalized Anxiety Disorder Symptoms

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by persistent, excessive and unrealistic worry about everyday things. This worry goes on every day, possibly all day. People with GAD feel their worrying is beyond their control and can’t be turned “off.” People with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) go through the day filled with exaggerated worry and tension, even though there is little or nothing to provoke it. They anticipate disaster and are overly concerned about health issues, money, family problems, or difficulties at work. Sometimes just the thought of getting through the day produces anxiety.

People with generalized anxiety disorder can’t seem to shake their concerns. Their worries are accompanied by physical symptoms, especially fatigue, headaches, muscle tension, muscle aches, difficulty swallowing, trembling, twitching, irritability, sweating, and hot flashes.

Common Generalized Anxiety Disorder Symptoms Include

Restlessness

Feeling of being keyed up or on edge

Feeling a lump in your throat

Difficulty concentrating

Fatigue

Trouble concentrating

Irritability

Easy to startle

procrastination

Impatience

Being easily distracted

Muscle tension

Trouble falling or staying asleep (insomnia)

Excessive sweating

Shortness of breath

Stomachache

Diarrhea

Headache

In general, anxiety disorders are treated with medication, specific types of psychotherapy, or both. Treatment choices depend on the problem and the person’s preference. Before treatment begins, a doctor must conduct a careful diagnostic evaluation to determine whether a person’s symptoms are caused by an anxiety disorder or a physical problem. Treatment options includes:

Medications

- Medication will not cure anxiety disorders, but it can keep them under control while the person receives psychotherapy.

Antidepressants

- Antidepressants were developed to treat depression but are also effective for anxiety disorders. Although these medications begin to alter brain chemistry after the very first dose, their full effect requires a series of changes to occur; it is usually about 4 to 6 weeks before symptoms start to fade.

SSRIs – Some of the newest antidepressants are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. SSRIs alter the levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain, which, like other neurotransmitters, helps brain cells communicate with one another.

Psychotherapy involves talking with a trained mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, or counselor, to discover what caused an anxiety disorder and how to deal with its symptoms.

If you think you have an anxiety disorder, the first person you should see is your family doctor. A physician can determine whether the symptoms that alarm you are due to an anxiety disorder, another medical condition, or both.

People with generalized anxiety disorder can adopt a number of effective self-help techniques. Using “self-talk” to intervene in your own anxious thoughts forcing yourself to stop the cycle of panic attacks and replace worried self-dialogue with practical dialogue can help you learn how not to worry.

As Daniel has said , some pain killers contain Codein and some contains muscle relaxtants ( e.g. Soma contains Cariosprodal which is OTC drug and addiction prone ). So these drugs may be relieving anxiety by giving euphoric feeling.

shawn c asked:

I have really bad anxiety, I cannot leave my house, study, do homework or chores because I just have horrible anxiety. Everyone who knows me knows that I have horrible anxiety and I cannot function at all, I am completely incapacitated by this. My days feel like day-long panic attacks, and since I have chronic pain and generalized anxiety disorder and OCD and a vision problem I just spend all my day obsessing over and over and over and over about that, and I am just obsessed with becoming smarter but I get bad anxiety doing anything like reading or stuff. Its been like this for 3 years and its getting pretty monotonous. I say I want to try meds but everytime I get close to trying them I chicken out because I am afraid it will make my personality inconsistent with who I am now, although that is already occuring with my pain meds. Its a strange dilemma that I am completely unsure how to approach, any input on this would be super appreciated
Thank you to everyone who responded, I found each of your entries to be helpful. I think I am going to try to implement my own Cognitive Behavioral therapy from what info I can recieve online, and I am going to start meds as soon as I can because I am getting really strong biological stress responses that I cannot modify behaviorally, and I have already tried multiple times with little success. I think taking the bio-psycho-social approach will help me since its so severe and engrained into my personality/routine, I really don’t know how to begin though. Thats going to be the hardest part, and I doubt I am going to change the cycle because it is so strong, but I will try at least.

UndomesticGoddess asked: I have an echocardiogram and have to be hooked up to a holter monitor for 48 hours at the end of the month. I am really anxious about it because I worry about the results. How can a subside unwanted and useless worrying? I have a generalized anxiety disorder and am currently on Effexor to help that.

But I have no sinus problems.. no fever, no tender sinus’s, no running nose, not stuffed up, no congestion, no fever, no mucus, etc.

So is it probably just my anxiety and head pressure and tight band feeling that I hear is common with anxiety and tension headaches?

asked: What I’m asking is, is there a biological basis for my anxiety “disorder” or is it just the way I think? If you looked at my brain, would there be anything different about it than the “average” person’s brain? Can I be “cured” from generalized anxiety disorder with just cognitive behavioral therapy or do I need medication?
