hi im paul and ive got a social anxiety disorder does anyone know how to cope with it?

Hi Paul, I have had trouble with groups of people that has on occasion developed into galloping panic attacks and I live with what is at times terribly severe clinical depression. I’ve been prescribed various medications, which work for some but mainly made me feel just numb, zombied and/or poisoned. So came off all of them each time after giving them a shot. And gone through three periods of counciling, talking therapy, which helped in as much as talking to anyone can but I’ve not solved my problems through it.
What HAS helped enormously is that since January I’ve been going to the gym and swimming regularly. You might see this as a ‘social’ and therefore potentially a trigger situation for your anxiety but if you can get past that and do it you’ll probably find , as I did, that everyone in there is just focused on whatever they’re doing and you do not have to interact with anyone at all. It can be like being on your own, especially if you stick some earphones in and listen to your music. It can be hard to motivate yourself to get up and go for it at first. It really is worth the effort though. Excercise has been scientifically proven to stimulate the production of mood uplifting neurotransmitters in the brain and chemicals called endorphins which also give you a sense of well-being. If your feeling better in yourself, more relaxed and confident, you will be far less likely to feel anxious in social situations.
See if you can get a membership for council run facilities, I found mine pays for itself several times over each month as I use it for gym or swimming so much. And you’ll find that there will be instructors there who will show you how to do a good work out, cardio-vascular and/or weights.
