Do specific situations cause panic disorder?

Jess asked:

I’m writing a brief paper about panic disorder and just wanted to clarify something.

Are the recurring panic attacks caused by the same situation each time? Or do the panic attacks happen randomly?

They are caused by the same feelings and thoughts each time but not neccessarily the same situation.
Everytime i am alone at home i might get a panic attack but i can also get them when i’m home with family. I might go to the library and not get panic but i might in the car and next to week might be different again though the thoughts that lead to my panic attack are usually always the same .

I have anxiety, I think that panic attacks can occur randomly. I don’t always have to have the same situation in order to get the attack. I may just get one out of no where. Like even if I am just here typing away. But that is just my experience.

I have about 2-3 panic attacks every month. THat’s down from 2-3 a week.
I have learned what situations will set off my panic attacks, and I have learned to distance myself from them.
    Large social gatherings
    confrontations at work
    bumper to bumper traffic
    small enclosed spaces.
    being to close to people
speaking in front of large crowds or being center of focus
fighting with a close friend or loved one
being approached by authoritative figures, abruptly.
THough sometimes I can not control when I get my attacks and though it seems to happen randomly, over the years I have noted a pattern. Any time my adrenaline heightens through an unexpected reaction, I will get a panic attack. It’s kinda hard for me to explain.

I would suggest you look at patterns of heightened states of awareness. Those experiences that produce a lot of excitement related to negative feelings.

At first, my panic attacks used to come so randomly (like just being in my own home or 10 feet away from it) but now it seems like they all happen in one same situation.

I’ve had my panic disorder for only 4 years since my family took a trip to Vermont but I’ve noticed they all lead into a huge crowd or mostly; in a car! It feels like I am so trapped and that I’m going to die.

I’m not 100% sure why being in a car (sitting in a passenger’s seat) triggers my attacks but I know that red lights and being so far from home is what brings them on. They don’t stop either until I”m driving or we have finally reached our destination.

Also, huge crowds trigger them too, but I actually think that might just be common amongst people so I have ruled that out.

So as far as my disorder goes, it’s caused by the same situation or relatively close to that situation.

They don’t necessarily need to be caused by the same situation, although they can be…but it has to do with having the same feelings and thoughts.
