Fear Of Popping Balloons

Balloon Modellers
Balloon modelling (also called balloon twisting) is an art of twisting balloons into any given shape sculpture. This art is performed by ‘Twisters’, who, most often work also as clowns, busker or other form of public entertainers.
Balloon modellers incorporates two designing styles. One style is the ‘Single-balloon modeling’, where the twister uses a single balloon to make the model. The other style is the ‘Multiple-balloon modelling’, where the twister uses more balloons. A twister could use any of these styles depending on their level of skill. Other techniques like ‘weaving’ or ‘stuffing’ are also used. Earlier on twisters would inflate the balloons with their mouths as an important part of the performance, but more twisters are using other means like hand pumps, or plugged-in electric pumps. This change was due to arising concerns such as-
- Most parents being apprehensive of their children handling balloons that have been in contact with a stranger’s mouth, and feared of germs spreading.
- In case the twister had to blow up many balloons, it became increasingly difficult due to increased pressure causing fainting, damaging of eyes by popping balloons or even damage to throat tissue, in severe cases.
- Most artists don’t want to be seen as bad role models putting balloons in their mouths, especially where there are young children.
Twisters therefore just pump air or nitrogen, since the models are quite heavy, and cannot float anyway.
This is an art which is easy to learn and can come in handy where a person is entertaining for a fee, or where cute but inexpensive decorations are required for a children’s event. A balloon can be shaped into anything, like simple dolls for younger children, to more creative items like pirate hats, swords, hooks, and super-hero helmets for older children.
