Fireworks Anxiety In Dogs
Dog Now Terrified To Go Outside?

Our older beagle has been slowly becoming frightened of going outside, due to the fireworks and terrible storms we have been having. But after a full night of horrible thunder and lightning, now she is totally traumatized and will pull back so hard on the leash it has hurt my back.

Usually in the morning I can coax her to go on her usual walk, but towards evening she fights and will go out just long enough to pee and then goes right back to the door.

The vet has prescribed an anti-anxiety pill but I would like to combine this with behavioral training.

I’m looking for help from anyone whose dog experienced a night of terror and now refuses to go out.

Thanks in advance. Haven’t tried the anti-anxiety pills from the vet yet but would like to use them in conjunction with behavioral training.

First of all, listen to your VET – not a bunch of people on the internet, unless you know for sure they have qualifications. by telling anyone not to give a prescription that your own vet – the one with the license and the patient/vet relationship- prescribed, amounts to practicing without a veterinary license over the internet. That’s dangerous, and illegal.

You have the tools to help your dog overcome this – it is time to use them. Give your dog the pills, and allow a bit of time for them to take effect. Like anything, it will take a bit of adjustment for your dog’s system to adjust to the new brain chemistry, and match it up with her behavioral instincts. She will adjust, slowly, so make no judgement at first, just allow her to get used to feeling differently, and follow the instructions you have been given.

Ask your vet for a referral to a behaviorist, and do it right. This is not something you should be doing by asking here. Behavior modification is not the same as training a dog to sit – it is very different, and must be done crefully, and correctly. A fearful dog can be dangerous, as they often believe they are fighting for their very existence. Please be careful.

The new drugs are not sedatives, but adjust the brain function that causes panic attacks – there is a chemical reaction that occurs, and the drugs will lessen the anxiety and face life with all its strange noises.

She is just using her instincts to protect herself – the big bang was outside somewhere; if she doesn’t go out, the bad thing won’t happen…makes perfect sense when you see it her way.

Rely on your professionals, and you will get through this. That is what they went to extensive schooling for, that is what you paid for, and it was a very smart move.
