I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Going to school everyday is scary because it makes me very anxious and being anxious makes me very sick. I have medicine but i don’t want to have to rely on this forever. How can i mentally control this? How can i distract myself from being anxious?

Work on knowing you are OK. Your worried about what others think of you. God didn’t make any junk. Go with the objective of helping someone at your school.

I have this same issue I probably have it worse then you but medication did work for me for the few weeks I took it very well but I stopped because it made me very tired and gave me sexual side effects. I still haven’t gotten over it yet the best thing to do is surround yourself with familiar people and do not expect anything from anyone, one of the main basis of anxiety is others opinions of you, live inside your body, dont live from what other people depict of you

Yeah i used to have anxiety too but didn’t want to take any medication i just wanted to deal with it myself and i did so you can to. It will take time and won’t happy over time but it can be done. With me i found out what was triggereing my anxiety and i delt with it. I went to counciling for about a year and i talked it out and my counseler gave me ideas on how to make it better. I hope this helped!

Calm down. Think Positive. And Accept it.

Calm down by maybe taking up meditation or yoga. Practice taking slow deep breaths when anxious.

Think positive by starting to make a conscious effort to block negative thoughts from your mind. When you are being negative. Stop and make yourself think about something else. Eventually you will be able to do this sub consciously.

Accept that you have an anxiety problem. I do, and I accept it. If we become bothered by it, it bothers us more, and ironically, if we dont mind having it, it goes away. It cannot hurt you, so just let it take its best shot at you.

Good Luck. Anxiety is really annoying, but its not half as bad as it can make you think it is.

I too have GAD. It started in high school but got really pronounced later in my mid 20s. It’s a very scary thing to go through with panic attacks and not being sure if you will even be able to make it through the day. Honestly, medicine was the best thing for me. I was started on Zoloft for depression which I only stayed on for about a year. And I was also put on Xanax (Alprazolam generic) for panic attacks, which I still take to this day. But now that my anxiety is under control I only have to take it but once every couple weeks or so. It just helped me to know that I have the rescue med there if I need it for certain stressful situations like giving a speech, job interview, being in my brother’s wedding, etc.

If you are wanting to go completely off the med (kudos to you for that)though you might want to try changing your diet. Cut out all caffeine because that will make you feel jittery and cause more anxiety. Also, you might want to consider counseling. And don’t forget to exercise daily! Tennis got me up off my butt and feeling good again!

Here is a great book my sister got me that really helped — “The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook” by Dr. Edward Bourne. That will give you some really good ideas on how to control anxiety naturally or with medication. Trust me, things will get better if you’re proactive in improving your health and it sounds like that’s exactly what you want to do. Good luck and God bless!

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI – Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called “St John’s Wort” – it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that “learned behavior” in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior – Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….
