How can I help resolve my anxiety attacks?

29 May 2010 12 Comments
Ann asked:

I am currently on 150mg/day of EffexorXR for depression and anxiety. However, lately I have had panic attacks or anxiety attacks at least every other day. I begin feeling short of breathe, my hands start to shake and I get very antsy. I cannot take another 150 tablet during the day, but I would like to know other methods of relaxing or calming myself down (possibly without medication).
I have been on effexor for about 2 years and I have been in counseling for the same amount of time.

I used to have the same problem. Try laying on a cold surface, such as a bare stone floor and shutting your eyes. Take long, slow breaths and try not to hyperventilate. Also, after such an attack (or regularily) you may want to take yoga as a stress release. Peppermint tea also has a slight calming effect. Hope this helps!

If you do not have enough money, you could take drugs, like alcohol or crack, to feel better and many do. But that does not cure it. The cure is to make more money. If you are depressed, the cure is not to take a drug, like Prozac. The cure is to be happier. If you have panic or anxiety, which everyone feels at one time or another, the cure is not to take drugs. The cure is to feel more tranquility, calmness and peace of mind. See site below for more on this.

Kevin Trudeau says in his best selling book, Natural Cures They Do Not Want You to Know About, “All illnesses and diseases are caused by the same things; (1) too many toxins in the body; (2) nutritionally deficiencies; (3) electromagnetic chaos exposure; (4) mental and/or emotional distress.” “The most effective way to cure and prevent disease is by getting the toxins out.” “One very powerful cleanse is, of course, fasting.” “Drugs only suppress symptoms, and they cause disease because they are toxic.” In More Natural Cures Revealed, Kevin Trudeau says “The facts are clear, drugs, both prescription and non-prescription, do not make you healthier, they make you sicker. Drug companies are not interested in your health. Drug companies only want you to buy and use more drugs. If you want to cure yourself of any disease you have and remain healthy, you must eliminate all non-prescription and prescription drugs.”

I am so sorry you are going through this. I know all too well what you are going through, as I have had fairly significant problems with panic and anxiety in the past. I remember feeling very sad, overwhelmed, embarrassed, ashamed – you name it!

It is my personal opinion that medications, while helpful, can only do so much. You need therapy along with meds to help provide you with tools to cope with the anxiety and panic attacks. I saw a therapist when I was having difficulties – I recommend Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This is NOT the “sit on the couch and talk about your childhood therapy”. This is therapy that teaches you techniques to cope with anxiety. Remember, anxiety is just your body reacting in a maladaptive way to stress. You can unlearn it, but it takes help. Good luck to you!

If you’re already on medication, then the best advice I can give you as a panic attack (and many other things) sufferer to another is to talk to your doctor and try another pill. But as one of the answerers said, the best thing would be for you to take control of the anxiety. Push yourself and commit to make them go away. When you have one, go to a public place where nobody knows you.. remember you will be under the adrenaline, but if you’re aware of it, just put this in your mind: ‘Im under an anxiety attack, I’ve had it before and I’ll probably have it again. But I’m not going to let this stupid decease make my life sad.’ (That happens in 10 seconds) Then interact with people, who have absolutely no idea what you’re going trough and you will see that the anxiety will begin to reduce and you’ll be cool!
That is my method, you can try it if you want to..
    Hope it helps,

It’s probably the Effexor. If you’ve been on it for 2 years perhaps it’s lost its effect on you. That is very common with prescription drugs. If you go to your doctor they will most likely follow their M.O. and prescribe for you another brand of drug.

If you want to try a drug-free product go with Panicyl. Works great for me. No anxiety, low stress, and no side effects. Also look into ‘cognitive techniques’ to handle the mental side of it.

    Hope this helps!

Effexor has SO many side effects and withdrawal effects, this is what is probably happening to you. What I can suggest to you is slowly weening off the effexor week by week, and then taking a natural anti depressant like 5 htp, also what you can do RIGHT away is start to take MAGNESIUM take about 3-400mg of it per day. it will work great! please feel free to message me if you wanna talk more about this as i am in the same boat as you. I noticed some of the answers are lame like that whizzkid guys response, he has no idea what you are going through.

The first step to learn anxiety panic attack relief is to believe that you have the ability to take control. Anxiety disorder is not a disease it’s a state of mind that can be controlled. The body responds to the messages sent to it by your mind, even if the situation is totally safe but your mind interprets it as unsafe, your body will respond to what you think. Read more here:

Step 1: Ensure your emotion is controlled daily. Don’t over reacted, stay calm and don’t get worry easily
Step 2: Think before your action. Don’t repeat her past experience on herself. Remind herself from time to time.
Step 3: Be confident to yourselves. Remember everyone is the winner. “Only One sperms out of millions fertilize an egg”
Step 4: Get a group of close friends to share your experience and get some activities that would occupied your time
Step 5: Increase scope of life. Meaning that she should involve in more social activities like dancing, outing and others.
Step 6: Put a rubberband on the wrist. If there is a negative thought, Tighten the rubber band and release it. Hence the effect of the pain would be able to reduce the possibility of negative thought.
    Good Luck.

most likely a pill isn’t the answer.

    1) sometimes if you are low on omega3 oils found in fish/walnuts/flaxseed etc can cause anxiety? if eating these foods helps then that’s part of the problem.. There’s all kinds of nutritional things that can cause problems.
    2) If you have past trauma – a lot of times you can have anxiety if something triggers a memory from something you remember. The thing is that a pill can’t really help you that much – all psychiatrists can do is drug you, they can’t really help you. It might take a lot of hard work with a therapist to help you deal with those things.
    3) Sometimes it’s just something inside you telling you you are going the wrong way or doing the wrong thing and no pill can help with that.
    4) sometimes grieving people experience all kinds of anxiety – and it takes grieving and getting through it – a pill can’t help you grieve any faster..

    Hi,

This program can help you calm your anxiety without any drugs. I have used it for the past 8 months and it has helped me a lot. My doctor got really mad when I told her I would not take any drugs for my anxiety. No offense but thank God I found this program before it got worst. Go check it out, you don’t have nothing to loose!

I agree with zeldaslexicon, CBT would be really helpful for you. It will help you to change the way you think about incidents and life in general which should help to reduce the anxiety.

The shaking and breathing problems are a physical response to the way you’re thinking about things. If you think about them differently so that they don’t cause the same anxiety then that will reduce the physical problems, which will reduce your anxiety – and so on.

Hypnotherapy and EFT are other ways of feeling calmer and dealing with your anxiety – or a mixture of all of them. Don’t just see a hypnotherapist who gives you suggestions of feeling calmer though as that (in my experience) is unlikely to work. You want to do some work on the thoughts that are causing the anxiety first.
