How can I overcome my fear of the doctor?

My biggest fear is going to have a checkup at the doctor. I know it sounds irrational but I am terrified they will find something wrong with me. I just don’t know how to deal with it. I always have an anxiety attack in the exam room. Is there anything I can do to get over this fear?

that must be hard to deal with and will probably be hard to overcome. maybe you could go to a therapist and see where this fear is stemming from? sorry i wasnt much of a help. i hope you get over it, im sure you’ll be okay.

Do everything you can to create it to be as comfortable as you can: take a close friend or several friends, wait in your car instead of the waiting room. do what it takes to provide a comforting support system around you and tell the dr. Talk on your cell phone while you wait to think about other things. If you have anxiety problems over other things, tell the dr. for anti-anxiety meds are really really great. I have anxiety issues and I HATE anxiety, but the meds make it so so so much better if they are needed.

It is commonly called “White Coat Syndrome”. You can avoid going to the doctor, but that will not solve your fear. You have to talk yourself through it. Are you fearful of dying? Is that the root cause of your fear?
Try to find what the ROOT cause of the fear is firstly. A lot of getting through it will be self-talk. But, you do not have to go it alone. Seriously, call on Jesus to send the Holy Spirit to go with you. He is the Comforter and the one called alongside to help you. I hope you find a place of peace.

What’s the worst that can happen if they find something wrong with you?

    You have cancer?
You have to have an operation?
You have to have a shot?

Break down what specifically scares you.

    Cancer?
Well, tell yourself that cancer is treatable, and the sooner you catch it the more survivable it is.

    Surgery?
Think of all the fun drugs you get to try, legally!
Think of being waited on and taken care of during recovery. You get to order around your friends and family. Isn’t that fun?
People are super nice to people who have been in surgery.

    Shots?
    Get a cute nurse.
Make a rude noise at the nurse.
Make the nurse give you a shot in your butt. That way, it’s unpleasant for both of you.
Realize it’s “just a pinch” of pain, then it’s over.

For whatever scares you, find something positive and fun.

Another idea is to take “mini-trips” to the office.
Call ahead, explain the situation, and ask if you can come and look at every thing in the office before your appointment. Be quiet, be polite, just desensitize yourself to the office and all the scary equipment. Then leave. Schedule another visit if you think you need one. Trust me, people in the medical field have seen it all. This isn’t weird!

Tell the doctor to either tell you everything up front, or wait and “lay it all on at once” at the end of the visit.
I’m a “tell as you go” type person, I want to know what each blip on the monitor, and each reading of the equipment says, means, and if it’s bad.
    BUT
    My friend is the opposite.
Her doctor does the whole exam, doesn’t say a word to her. (well, he has to tell her to stand up, turn her head, etc) Then after the doctor is done, they meet in the doctor’s office and go over everything.
Decide which is less traumatic for you, and stick with it.

    Good luck.

Hi, Thanks for your honesty and opening up. I have been doing this music therapy or sound vibration meditation for years now. And I just know that saying the mantra GAU-RA-AN-GA loud enough so you can hear it works wonders with any sort of anxiety. It works better if you combine it with your breathing. Take a deep breath in and think about the sound GAU-RA-AN-GA and say it to the length of your out going breath. If you can not do it at a doctor’s office. Just say it in your mind. Practice it at home before going for 10 or more minutes. The more comfortable your body is when practicing the more you can focus on the sound and benefit. For instance do it while having a bubble bath or relaxing in the sun. If you do it every day, eventually you will overcome your fear for good, trust me, it can happen. After you wake up and before going to bed is the best. You can contact me if you like or if you found out by yourself that it is working. Also if after practicing you become interested to know why it works. All the best.
