How can I overcome my social anxiety?

Filip E asked:

I will soon have a presentation at my school, but the problem is that I suffer greatly from a social anxiety. I fear that something in my performance will go wrong. I know consciously that it doesn’t matter what happens, yet my subconscious seems to always disagree and pushes emotions that makes me feel like I would die as a result of the presentation. What should I do to overcome this fear? Is there any sort of mental preparation I could do before the presentation?

I know what doesn’t work, running. Not doing it. Face your fear! Tackle this now too while your young, don’t take this fear into adulthood. You WILL and CAN overcome this, a lot of people have had and have SA. More than you know. Your not alone! : )

I go through the same thing all the time, so i have to agree with,Auto, you have to just face your fear. The more you do it the easier it becomes, Im in high school now and I know that when i enter the real world I’ll have to get over social anxiety.

Nothing to worry dear! Prepare for the presentation very well and systematically. Go to the gathering as if nothing happening to you. Do not look at any particular face among the audience, but look far away at some point and start giving your presentation. Or if you have a very closely known friend sitting in the audience, then you look at his/her face and start your presentation. This way you will not have any anxiety and your presentation would be a complete success. You will feel like to get many more such Presentation chances.

I have that too. I CAN NOT PRESENT IN FRONT OF PEOPLE!!!! lol It’s NOT just U it’s EVERYONE. I know sooo many people can not present in front of crowds. It’s completely normal. Just say to yourself that nothing is going to go wrong, i can do this, i am strong, i don’t care what U THINK, this is only for a few minutes and it will be over soon. Also don’t let ur nerves get to U!!! I had to present a project once in my english class and completely broke down! My hands were shaking, my palms were sweaty, and i was stuttering my words. Before i presented my paper i just told the class that i was realyyyy nervous about this and told them that i was not good at doing speeches. After my speech they all applauded me and my teacher was encouraging my through the speech to keep going and it was ok and ur fine, and that make me feel good. Do some yoga it really helps and take a calm – U -nate pill. U can get them in CVS or any drugstore. Just don’t worry!! There r alot of people who support u and care about u!! U CAN DO IT!!
    Best of luck!!!

One great way that helped me is this — You know that YOU are the presenter and others are there to listen to you. This means that you are the one who is in command! Not them. They are your subjects and have no choice but to listen to you. You have the microphone and you have the stage. Treat them as ‘lower’ people so to speak while you command the stage.

This should help in getting over the fear. Remember, that people actually do want you to take the command! Wouldn’t you want a speaker to take the command while you are listening to him/her?
