How do I overcome my fear of darkness?

I’m 30 yo female and up to this day, I still fear darkness. I have no traumatic experiences as a child. Growing up, I told myself my fear would pass but I still sleep with ALL the lights on. Once it gets dark, my mind goes into overdrive.

I used to be afraid of the dark, but now I like to ponder in the darkness as I sleep.

Carry a high-beam flashlight. That way, if you ever have to use it, you’ll blind whoever is sneaking around your bedroom (as well as scare him to death)

listen to music while you sleep with something that calms you and makes u feel happy next to you like a photo or a teddy bear.take steps to overcome your fear.
Figure out what it is about the dark that scares you, your spouse or your child. Is it that the person secretly believes something unidentified is waiting for the lights to go out?

Relax with a good book before going to bed, take a hot bath, spend time with someone you trust, make sure your bed is comfortable and cozy.
Be sure the troubles you repress aren’t sneaking up on you. Yes, if you are holding back something which is bothering you from your daily life these unspoken issues tend to creep up on us manifesting as nightime terrors.Don’t be ashamed to plug in a night light reguardless of your age. Turn a bedside lamp on whenever you become frightened and turn it off when you are once again relaxed.

Let yourself be in the total dark (no lights at all) for different increments of time. Set your alarm the first night for…say 5 minutes. 5 minutes will be like your light at the end of the tunnel. After the five minutes are up you can turn on however many lights you want. Next week, set your alarm for 10 minutes. And, keep doing this until you make it through the night…sleeping. If at some point the increments are so large that you experience to much anxiety to move to a longer period of time, don’t. But, don’t go backwards. Just stay at that time increment until you are comfortable with it. You’ll get there. Also try using some a meditation technique that works for you.

I like the lamaze technique: focus on the muscles in your toes until your toes are completely relaxed, then move to your feet. Focus on your feet until they are completely relaxed. Your ankles next, then calves, knees, thighs…keep going until your entire body is totally relaxed.
