How do I tell my mom that I have a mental disorder?

Don’t Blame me asked:
I went to the doctor today to confirm if I have GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) or not and the doctor was almost positive that I do and is referring me to a psychologist just to get an “official” diagnosis. I don’t know how to tell my mom that I have a mental disorder, we don’t really have open communication. What should I do?
I am 18, almost 19. I am a freshman in college and currently living at home with my family.

Have your doctor have a talk with your mom…
You do what is going to make you feel best. You just plain say it. It you have a stress disorder you need to make everything a little easier and worrying about telling your mom wont help. Just let her know and see how it goes. If she is not supportive you don’t have to talk about it with her but maybe you could find a support group and people to talk to that will help you get it out. I hope you feel better and things go well with your mom.
Im sorry to hear that Shan. Well ahhh, funny that but I think you should be more concerned about how you want to treat this and not be worried about what your Mom thinks. Tell her and let her deal with it in her own way, if she doesn’t wanna support you then seek a partner or friend who will.
What you should do is speak to her slowly. Say, “mom could I speak to you?” Then if she says yes, tell her slowly, so she doesn’t freak out. This might make your relationship with her stronger and closer. Hope this helps!!!

Is it necessary? Are you living under her roof? If you are living under her roof and are at the age when you and your doc would need to tell her then go ahead and just tell her. Heck, she may have it herself. A lot of us do. It’s not like you committed murder.
Otherwise It’s your business to share with whomever you wish.
Good Luck!
Have fun.
I have GAD, it’s really not a big deal. I called my mom right after, told her and how they put me on medication and she just said “ok” and hoped it went well. How old are you?
First of all its nothing to be ashamed of! Many people have anxiety and dont even know it! You should tell your mom and show her that your taking the proper mature steps to control your life and make it better. BEST of luckkk!!!!!!!
