How do you overcome your fear of darkness?

Okay, stupid question, but I’m serious here. I’m currently 18 and I’m still afraid of the dark. I always leave the hall lights on when I go to bed and it’s driving my parents crazy. Whenever it’s dark enough that I can’t see, I always start getting paranoid and I can never fall asleep. I can always never stay home alone at night. I don’t recall any trauma regarding darkness so I’m not sure where this fear is coming from. Embarassing question, but I just want to do something about it.

being afraid of the dark is normal, you probably watched to may horror movies and you think that it will haven to you. now clear your mind and remember in movies its fantasy in real life you rule. i as old as your parents and i still have a hall light on at night, not for the same reason all the toys left in the hallway.
i don’t know if you are religious and i don’t want to push any thing on you.
I am not religious i just have faith in God. I ask him to keep me safe when i sleep, drive a car, at work, any way. try that or stop watching horror movies.

    Never fear.

I think, Shellster, all you need is a cat or something. Hahahaha.

If you are able to sleep in the next day, I would recommend, keeping the lights off, and lay in bed till you do fall asleep.

Another option, have friends (or siblings) over for a night or something (not sure if do sleepovers) and you’ll find yourself rising to the occasion to face your fear, to prevent embarrassment.

I get that way every now and then. It’s not neccessarily the darkness that scares me, it’s what I think about (right now I’m in the dark, so I won’t talk about it, because I’ll get scared myself, lol).
Anyway, usually I turn the tv on in the other room if I’m home alone and then turn on the stove light, the dinning room light, and the light in my mom and dad’s room on.

Other times, I turn on my cell phone and get on the internet through there until I become extremely sleepy (or I put my cell phone on the charger and turn it face up where the screen can glow throughout the room like a light) and other times I get a book, hide under my covers (mostly in part my sister sleeps in the same room with me and she complains about the light) and use a flash light to read.

When I look over my answer, I’m starting to think I go overboard with this darkness thing, but it’s okay. I really can’t think of anything minimum to do, but I have tried using a night light and using a portable radio (with the volume turned down a bit), and the radio works fine. Having the extra noise (not too loud of course) can also add some kind of comfort.

I have the same problem.17 years old and have never slept in my own bedroom. I also can’t think of anything that might have caused my phobia of the dark! my only resort would be some hypnotism, nlp or eft.

Well in the army they taught me do not stare directly at an object at night because your mind can play tricks. Look at the outline instead. Try to concentrate on your surroundings it should lessen your fear.
