I hear ya, I am the same way. One thing I had to do is realize that I am too critical on myself of how to act and what others will think of me, which makes one a perfectionist and a people pleaser. Being a perfectionist puts way too much pressure on a person because you will most likely (and who is) never be perfect. And being a people pleaser is going to make you eventually resent others and yourself because for one, as the saying goes..you can’t please all of the people all of the time and for another, you will lose yourself when trying too hard to be what you think everyone else would like you to be. It doesn’t work anyway because there’s always going to be someone who doesn’t care for you. That’s not to say don’t be nice and respectful of others feelings but just try to be yourself with conviction. Maybe worry a little less about making friends and try enjoying what you do instead.
Also, realize that no one is ever going to be an expert at the job when new. The old timers at said function should know this and not expect you to be tops right off the bat. If they don’t understand this then that is their problem not yours.
