He has trouble going into places, i.e. cannot go into places, so therefore unable to go into a doctors office to get help. How does someone like this get the help they need?

Maybe get the doctor to come and see them so they don’t have to move from where they are instead of the person having to go somewhere to see the doctor.?

Do they have a support group (i.e. family, good friends)? Just having someone else that understands their problem along might help them. Could be agoraphobia, which is a fear of going out into public places where one might have an anxiety attack and suffer embarassment, fear, etc. They can always phone and speak to the therapist, good ones will understand the problem and talk to them on the phone about it, or refer them to someone that can help.

I have suffered from this as well. It is called Panic Disorder, and can lead to agoraphobia, which is a fear of open spaces or leaving your house.

Your friend needs to seek therapy and medication. Both require actually leaving the homestead, unfortunately.

I started out leaving the house by going to the emergency room. There, they gave me some anxiety medication to calm me down, with a 3 day supply to last me until I went to the doctor. I took some just before going to see my doctor, it kept me calm while he examined me, and he gave me a more long-lasting prescription and signed me up for therapy sessions.

Your friend needs to label his feelings as anxiety–once you give it a name, it makes it a whole lot easier to beat. And tell him to remind himself he is not the only one who feels this way, and he will not die from it. There is no recorded case of that happening. That should provide some comfort.

It sounds like he has a bad case of generalized anxiety disorder and maybe some depression. The anxiety sounds like its reached a point to where its out of control. If you really want to help you need to treat this person and their situation gently. Be supportive and comforting. In the end though this person should probably go seek help from a psychologist and talk to their regularly doctor. When its gotten that bad anxiety can be very difficult to overcome on your own. Try and convince him it will only get worse if he goes untreated, it sounds harsh but hes going to have to bite the bullet and get out to get help. Of course you can start to help at home. Like does he have family to lean on, is he working, physically active, friends to lean on. There is many things that can take the edge of without getting professional help, but it can be a big benefit.
