Is fear of hell present in a lot of Christian child indoctrination techniques?

Desiree asked:

Even the prayers that Christians teach children, prayers that make no direct mention of Christian hell, still have fear of hell lurking in the implications of the prayer. Take that prayer that goes, “If I die before I wake, I pray the lord my soul to take.” The implication here is that if the lord doesn’t take this child’s soul, hell is the only other alternative, right? Creepy, huh, and this is what Christians have been doing to children for over a thousand years.

Not really. My parents or teachers never threatened Hell.

    The christain needs its fear.

In regards to ‘my speeling is perfekt’, this is the first person since Falwell who has the lack of fear to admit their fear of Teletubbies. How bizarre.

No. Hell was the least of my worries when I was a child, unfortunately, when it should of been.

Do you want it sugar coated or the truth.

Consider one thing the mind of a child would not try to determine where it would go if it didn’t go with God. i.e. that is adult rationalizing. A child just believes that what he asks will be done, funny Jesus stated that we should have faith as a child. These prayer I pray the Lord my soul to keep, deliver us from evil are all prayers of protection against an unseen enemy. But that’s a class for another day.

I have never been indoctrinated in my life, unless you call learning the two times table “indoctrination”.

Nobody wins an argument by using loaded language you know. They only betray the fact that they have got no real arguments. But we knew that already didn’t we?

Fear of hell is good for you. Otherwise you end up there.

Michael replied: “By numerous and subtle means. I look at the Catholic Church as if it were a sphere. To destroy it, you must attack it in numerous small points until it loses all resemblance to what it was before. We will have to be very patient. I have many ideas that might seem at first sight to be petty and childish, but I maintain that the entirety of those petty childishnesses will become an invisible weapon of great efficacity.”

“Afterwards, to bluntly suppress the cult of the Saints. The Saints must disappear before God, although it is much easier to kill God than His Saints…Then, we will proceed to suppress Judgment, Heaven, Purgatory and Hell. This is all very easy… Many are well disposed to believe that the Goodness of God surpasses all crimes. All we have to do is to insist on this Goodness. A God Whom no one fears, quickly becomes a God about whom no one thinks. Such was the end to be reached. ”

“Such is the compendium of the orders which I sent throughout the world.”

I was 8 when my Aunt died. At her funeral the minister pulled all us children aside into another room and told us that if we died without being “saved” we would spend eternity in hell. Nice man. There were several children younger than I was being told that. Oh yes. In a fundamentalist household the fear of hell is preached to children.

I was never afraid of Hell as a child because I never heard of it. And since I never heard of it, I certainly didn’t think that if the Lord didn’t take my soul, the devil or hell would. I never was afraid as a child. I confused as to why you would think this?

The Lord’s prayer was a source of comfort to me despite what your making it out to be.

God offers eternal life. There is no fear of death and hell.

I don’t think it’s as common as you’d think. Maybe it’s just different for different sects.

Thinking back upon my own unwilling indoctrination, most of the threats just seemed to come from parents or clergy (go to church, go to CCD, and behave, or else we’ll ground you). The afterlife didn’t come up too much. It was more about going through the motions and doing whatever arts and crafts projects we were told to do.

Yes, thats what it sounds like. Its true what one of the other people said on here “Christians need their fear”. I think religion is REALLY annoying so I don’t really pay much attention to the b.s, but I went to Religious Ed up until a couple years ago and that was one of the things that i noticed, the “If you don’t go to church he will banish you to hell”, I think its a bunch of crap myself but thats just my opinion. Yes the Christians do try to put fear in children.

Nope, Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t teach it.
