My friend has a dog suffering from severe anxiety. The dog is a female Viszla, 4y/o?

The dog started jumping when things like the doorbell would ring or the oven timer would go off. It got worse(over the past 2yrs) and the dog is now on Prozac(this isn’t the first antianxiety drug that she’s tried for the dog with her veterinarian’s supervision). The dog will constantly look around the room as if someone/something is there with it. Last night the dog flipped out and ran underneath her nightstand, tipping it over and then cowered between the bed and wall. A few hrs later, same thing. The dog was scratching at her bedroom door and then bolted into the room and cowered underneath her bed. My friend also owns another Viszla that is 7y/o and happens to be the 4y/o dog’s sister. The older dog doesn’t act this way. Both dogs are well loved, no abuse ever. Does anyone know if this is something that happens with this breed of dog? Is this something genetic that happens with breeding the same parent dogs too many times? Any help would be appreciated.

I have always known the Vizsla breed to be high energy, high anxiety. They have a higher tendency for separation anxiety and general anxiety if they’re not getting enough attention. From the sounds of it, this dog got the short end of the stick in the mental department. It’s no offense to the dog of course. Sometimes dogs just end up that way no matter how well you breed them. Even if you pay the dog all sorts of attention, they might not feel it’s enough, and get anxious. I would recommend your friend keep in contact with the veterinarian and maybe try to find a behaviorist. There are people out there with TONS of experience in this, and even if it costs a bit, it’s worth it for the dog to be happy. I’m sure the prozac isn’t exactly cheap. Good luck. Vizslas can be great dogs, but they can also require a lot of experience!
