Otc Anxiety Relief
When would a physician prescribe Vistaril?
I see that it is indicated for allergy states, emesis, and something about anxiety–”For symptomatic relief of anxiety and tension associated with psychoneurosis and as an adjunct in organic disease states in which anxiety is manifested”. <--I have no idea what that means.
Anyone know when why a physican would choose this drug over first line agents for emesis, OTC antihistamines for allergy sxs, or SSRI's for anxiety conditions? Is this a simple question of patient tolerability? Or, perhaps Vistaril is indicated as a first line agent for one of these conditions or something of which I am not aware?

For allergies, especially when you’re dealing with itchy skin, hydroxyzine is less sedating than, say, diphenhydramine but more than the newer “non-sedating” antihistamines.
It’s commonly used for its anti-emetic properties in conjunction with narcotic analgesics, especially when both are given intramuscularly, but there’s also something to be said for its oral use.
The anxiolytic properties aren’t much, but the indication predates the introduction of the benzodiazepines, so much more the SSRI’s, and it’s hanging in there more out of inertia than any other reason. There’s also something of a tradition of giving a nice, painful (and therefore satisfying) butt full of Vistaril to the person who’s having a fit in the ER for no good reason, and without a chronic mood disorder. It certainly isn’t likely to do any harm except in the anatomic area described. In those with chronic mood disorders, there isn’t much use.
