Hi
I am 34 years old and I have been dealing with Anxiety and panic attacks for over 6 years now. but recently for the past 6-7 months I got worse. I am on Celexa and I take Klonopin for the attack. Neither one works!! back in Dec I had Thyroid problems and they told me that was the cause. but that is all behind me and I get these attacks frequently, no mtter what i do, where I am.. they just come out of no where!
If you have used a medication that has helped you, or use something that can stop it as it come on, please let me know. I do not want these attacks controling my life!
Thank you

Celexa and Klonopin didn’t work for me either – but now I am on Effexor and I saw a big improvement. I was also on Zanex (Zanax?) for a while and found that it helped to stave off a panic attack if I took it in time.

Have you looked at the circumstances around the panic attacks? What sets them off? Keep a journal about what you are doing everyday so you might find a pattern. I find when I am in a panic attack I have to meditate and breathe… However, I do take zanix at the onset of a panic feeling. I am also on Cymbalta.

Perhaps your dose of Klonopin is too low? Discuss this with your doc. Klonopin is very good for anxiety and panic.

If this medication is not strong enough, there are antipsychotics which work wonders. They are also called neuroleptics and major tranquilizers. They definitely calm the body and mind down and get rid of panic and anxiety. A good one is Geodon.

Talk to your doc asap. There is no reason to needlessly suffer.

Meanwhile, do deep breathing and exercise if you are able. Both quiet the anxious body and distract the mind. It is very beneficial.

Is your life especially stressful right now? sometimes even if you can deal with stressors at the time of the stress, later, they sneak back at you. Also try some cognitive behavioral therapy to try and control your moods to lessen the anxiety that leads to the panic attacks. Focus on magnification of problems that can make things overwhelming.

I have the answer you must first know about the diseases and what they are..A panic attack is a short burst of adrenaline released into the system causing a ( fight or flight symptom) rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, confusion mainly triggered by certain chemicals in your system or mental anguish…anxiety disorder is the same only a prolonged effect leading sometimes into social disorder or as I say agoraphobic .. the big debate long studied is what are the triggers and what are the treatments. I have been living with it since I was twelve couldn’t function in school, public you get the picture.. I eventually learned I had a lack of a chemical in my brain that caused me to have panic attacks.. which was greatly reduced by epilepsy medication as they go hand in hand for the chemical loss..so I was told as ,I grew older I went all natural and since have come understand my traumatic childhood and triggers that bring it on..I have been too counseling and hypnotherapy and acupuncture and between all that have not had a episode oddly enough unless I get an ear infection for 5 years now.. so remember you cant die from anxiety or panic attacks and secondly let go to what your holding on too..picture this if you put a name on everything your worried about on a potato and put them all in a sack and carried that sack round with you everyday 24/7 how long would it be before you became exhausted, tired, panicky about where you left it ,when you set it down ,nervous if it is OK..short of breath hoping its all right so on see the pattern…hope this helps

    Hi lovemy02lancer,

If your medication is not helping, tell your doctor and change it. Celexa is actually quite good, but the full benefits are realized only after about 5 months. Effexor is also helpful.
It’s quite possible that the thyroid problem set this off. However, if you are prone to having panic attacks, then even though the thyroid problem may have cleared, you will still have panic attacks. Ask your doctor if beta blockers will help.
You might also want to consider making changes in your life to help with the problem. For example, exercise won’t make it go away, but it can reduce it. There’s hypnosis which can be incredibly helpful. There are also products like Anxius and PureCalm that can help. There are other drug-free programs like the Linden method or Panic Away which have helped thousands of people overcome their panic attacks. You’ll have to take an active interest and do some research. This helps in your understanding of what’s happening to you. Changes unfortunately take a while and also require hard work. I hate to say this, but honestly, there’s no easy way out. Read, get help, use whatever tools you have at your disposal and always be patient and motivated. Your determination will pull you through. The panic attacks will eventually get less.

i was on Zoloft for a year when I was first diagnosed, but it really didn’t help. I have found that with yoga and anti-anxiety tapes I am so much better! I rarely get a panic attack anymore and if I do, that is when I will take my lorazapam.

    Good luck
