Look it up on the internet and get all the info you need.
Effexor XR is primarily an anti-depressant. If you research this drug online, you will find that its side effects include some awful symptoms. My husband was on this for a few months, and when he was ready to come off it, it caused all kinds of weird discomfort. I know that Effexor is an effective anti-depressant. I’ve not heard of it being used to treat social anxiety – - I’ve heard that Paxil is effective for that. I am not attempting to prescribe for you, not do I want to discourage you about your medication. Lots of studies have been done regarding Effexor – - check this out before you continue taking it. My feeling is that it’s very nasty stuff that should be taken off the market. Take care.
I took it for generalized anxiety disorder and it worked well. It took about 1 week to get over nausea and dizziness. Then once I got to 150 mg I was able to do many more things. It really helped.
Social anxiety is a complicated business that falls under the category of depression.
l personally have not taken this med. It may work, or it may not, which means something else will then be prescribed…
The key to actually solving the problem is a course of talk therapy to devise methods of dealing with social situations, that will work for you.
What the medicine will do is calm you down enough that you will be able to resolve the problem gradually and permanently.
Good luck, and remember, many of the “cool” people you meet suffer from it also.
I took Prozac for anxiety and it really helped. I understand that it is different than the one you are talking about but I think they work about the same. One important thing to keep in mind is that each anti-depressant works differently for each person. Therefore, if this one doesn’t work for you or you can’t get over the side effects, then try a different one until you find one that works. I had to try several before I found one that I liked. Also, if there is someone else in your family who is successfully on an anti-depressant, you might want to try that one. It has been found that people in the same family tend to react the same to the different anti-depressants.
Good luck!
I took Effexor for two years until I lost my medical insurance. I absolutely loved it.
I had taken Prozac, which made me do little more than sleep a lot and shake in the morning. I had tried Wellbutrin and Trazadone which did nothing at all for me. Effexor is the only one that I knew was effecting me in a positive way.
Prozac and Trazadone work on Serotonin, Wellbutrin on Dopamine, as I understand it. Effexor works on norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine and it did the trick for me. I could focus more and get things done and I wasn’t afraid to go out and live.
Of course, it all depends on your problem and your brain chemistry on what will work for you. It sucks having to try drug after drug, side effects, weaning off them, to get something that will work, but hopefully you’ll find what works for you and don’t be afraid to tell your doctor if it is or isn’t working, so you can finally find the one that helps you.
There are side effects to Effexor. I got bad body odor when I first started (even with deoderant), but that subsided after a few weeks. If you forget to take your Effexor, you WILL know it. It gives you little brain shocks. Don’t worry, they don’t hurt.
