Please read the details! Is it a bad thing if my dog may have separation anxiety?

My maltese ( age unknown she was a rescue from a shelter) Lucy believed to be between 1-2 years old may have separation anxiety. Is that a bad thing? I think she does because the scratches and barks(She stops after a while but she doesn’t bark at all. Not even when chasing a cat which hardly happens because there aren’t many here in my neighborhood.) at the door when we leave even to just get the mail or something. I just read the things that might happen if a maltese thinks it is the boss.( Which is the bad thing because she doesn’t believe she is the leader of the home. She obeys too.) One of them was separation anxiety. What causes this? What can i do to stop this? Is it a bad thing? What are the symptoms? PLEASE HELP! I REALLY WANT TO HELP HER!
