Thunder Anxiety In Dogs
Shold I castrate my 9 1/2 year old dog?

My dog has picked up a bad habit about 2years ago of recking the house when we are not home (more so during storms). He didn’t do it as a puppy but we moved to FL where it thunders and rains almost every day during the summer. We shut all of the doors in the house and turned up loud music. This didn’t help. We are now thinking about caging him but he was caged as a puppy and he would wreck his paws trying to get out not to mention going to the bathroom in it ALL of the time. Medication is not an option. Should I castrate him? Will it get him to calm down at all. It is fear and separation anxiety that drive him to ruin things and hurt himself. PLEASE HELP!

Getting him neutered will definitely not help. His fear of storms will not change at all by doing this. It might actually, if anything make things worse because he might become mad at you. It will probably traumatize him by getting him neutered at such an age. I definitely would not recommend neutering your dog. You could call a trainer to get him crate-trained so that he won’t tear up your house, however it still will not stop him from the rest of the bad habits he possesses. Yes, neutering can sometimes calm a dog down, especially if it is a puppy or if it is an extremely hyper dog, which your dog does not seem to be. Your dog does not seem hyper to me, he simply seems to have seperation anxiety, which is usually common in puppies, so it seem like your 9 1/2 year old dog has a lot of puppy qualities. My suggestion would be to call a trainer that could help you with your dog’s anxiety problems and to help with any other problems you may be having with your dog. I also suggest renting some Cesar Millan videos from the library. He is an amazing dog whisperer in case you haven’t heard of him. They are easy to find and VERY informative. Good luck with your baby!!!!! :-)
