Travel Anxiety In Cats
Any tips on traveling on a plane with a cat?

I might be attending vet school in a few months in the caribbean, and hopefully my cat will get to come with me. However, this means she will be flying in an airplane with me – hopefully I can have her with me as “carry on”, and I plan to have the vet prescribe her some anti-anxiety medication too.

Does anyone have any experience flying on a plane with a cat? Do you have any tips for me to make this as easy on Belle as possible? Belle gets terrified of loud noises, and I’m afraid that the anti-anxiety medication won’t last the whole trip or something (the flight could be very long with several layovers).

She is going to need to be updated on all her vaccines. Belle will also need a passport. Your vet can give you one. Some countries quarantine animals before letting them into the country. To make sure they don’t have any illnesses.

When I took my cat to Spain with me. They were going to put her in the bottom part of the plane with the other animals. Luckily, we were late and it was raining. So they put my cat in one of the empty seats at the back of the plane. I think you can pay an extra fee and have your cat sit next to you on the ride. I am not sure though. So, you may want to call the flight company to see if they allow it.

To comfort Belle I would put her favorite blanket and bed in the carry-on case. You can spray or sprinkle catnip on it too. The anti-anxiety medicine is a good idea as well. If your cat does does sit next to you on the flight I would talk to her in a nice voice to calm her down.

Here are some sites with more information on flying with cats.
