But for the mostpart people (myself included) tend to fear how family, friends, or society in general may think of them. What causes this fear? Is it a part of human nature?

Pure stupidity.
thats because we have been conditioned since birth to conform. following social norms can be good as it greases realtionship. the trouble with social norms comes when the norms confronts with laws esp on free expresion and nudity. most people would not want to pose nude in playboy. it takes a brave soul to do that and just say that nudity is nothing but just art. over time, nude poses in playboy becomes the norm.
social norms changes over time. so if you fel deeply abt something in ur community, be the first to set a trend. it can be anything such as the acuse of womens oppresion in some nations. do u know that female circumsation is common in many muslim societies. in the process, the genitals of young females are mutilated. in soem contries like india, female foeticide is done a sthe society there prefers baby boys to girls.
so if you take up these causes in ur community and support women in developing nations, you can set a trend. be brave honey. you only live once.
