What is a good over the counter medication that I can take for anxiety?

Stacy asked:

I need something to help with anxiety and panic attacks. The doc has me on zoloft and xanax. I am always tired and a bunch of other horrible side affects. I want something natural that is going to help. Vitamins or herbal meds or something. Any suggestions?

I just tried fish oil for 3 days. I can see some benefits. Will continue for 6 months to see the result. I take 4000mg of it a day

I know of no OTC meds for anxiety. Xanax IS an anti-anxiety med however! If it isn’t working, ask your doctor to change you to ativan or vallium. For me Vallium works wonders. Most doctors are hesitant to prescribe them for longer than a few months however due to the risk of addiction to them. Hope this helped. :)

kava — Standardized extract. It is an herbal supliment. You can find it in any vitimen store, Walmart, or at swansonVitamens.com — 1-800-437 4148 They send out catalogs also

I’m going to agree with everyone else. When I had panic attacks and anxiety, xanax worked like magic. It was like night and day. I highly recommend that you adjust the dose or change medications to something more tolerable. Or if your still not happy, try to treatment from someone else instead of doing it yourself OTC.

Definetly let your doc know if you are / want to stop taking esp the zoloft! There can be some serious side effects of stopping any anti-depressant! Zoloft is in a class of meds called “SSRI’s” – there may be other meds that are less sedating. Or if you take Zoloft in the am, try switching to nighttime if that’s ok with your doc. Check out the national institute of health website nih.gov. Good luck!

Chamomile tea is very relaxing just before bedtime or anytime you feel stressed. It is not a good idea to stop taking your medicine that you are currently taking without consulting your doctor first. Tell the doctor how the medicine makes you feel and why you do not like it. Give your doctor a chance to recommend what changes should be made to help you feel better. That is the doctors job after all-to help you feel better.

passion flower,, liquid extract, i like to take that with liquid kava kava. whatever the dose is on the bottle i double it. at least. its really some of the worst tasting stuff you’ll ever put in your mouth, but works well. ..otherwise i just go to the garage.

btw,, i think the passion flower works better than the kava if i had to pick one.

If you aren’t taking drugs, try 5HTP (300 mg a day but do not take if you take any antidepressant)
    Kava-Kava is calming
Chamomile tea (3-4 cups a day) works well.
    Valerian also calms.
Self-hypnosis and retraining your brain to react calmly is the real solution
