I would like to get a new job, but developed panic disorder a year and a half ago. I have been in the same job for three years. I am nervous about looking for a job knowing I have panic disorder. I am both nervous about telling prospective employers about it, and also having panic attacks on the job. Is there anything I can do to ease myself into looking for new work? Would it be seen as a bad thing to tell prospective employers? I am in cognitive therapy, and also under a psychiatrists care.

Is there a mental health Clubhouse in your city? Ask a therapist. Clubhouses build job skills and help you get used to getting up and going somewhere every day. Some even have a job placement assistant service.
try looking for work at a place you’re comfortable in. like a store or restaurant you frequent.
are you on medication? if not, you should consider trying it. talk to your doctor.
also, you do not have to tell a potential employer anything about your mental illness!
know one need to know if you get a new job don’t tell it. Maybe it will a job that you will enjoy and not panic over. It is none of your employers business about your medical condition
I have dealt with the same issue…i developed severe panic disorder a little over a year ago that caused me to lose my job..i also have a metabolic problem and anxiety meds dont work well for me
i felt helpless and incapable of working but eventually took a job as a nanny for a year…its a more flexible job and you dont necessarily need to put it on your resume…it really helped me regain the confidence i had lost at my previous job and proved to me that i can wake up every morning, go to work, and do well…i actually just quit nannying this weekend and feel ready to take on a more challanging job…
just try and rememeber that you do have talents and abilities that you are especially proficient in and no one can take that away from you…anxiety may tell you that youve lost them but thats just a protective fear response…not reality…and if you give anxiety an inch it takes a mile…and you end up worse off than before…
i know its not easy but try and remember your accomplishments and all the things youve worked hard for in life because youre still that person!…..theres just this annoying obstacle of anxiety you have to overcome and exploring a variety of resources can help you take your life back and feel good about who you are and your ability to function in society
you can and will do this…i wish you the best!
