Would you say that, for the most part, anxiety disorders are permanent conditions?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, etc. I realize they can be helped, but can they be completely eliminated? Should I stop trying to cure myself?

    In my opinion I don’t think they can be “cured” they can only be maintained. If you are taking anti-anxiety meds I would also suggest getting therapy along with it.

    Excellent question. I am doubtful these conditions can be *cured*, but I do believe they can be controlled. Often people with these disorders have relatives with the same conditions, so I truly believe genetics play a big part here. In terms of trying to cure yourself, that’s something which I suspect would be very hard for most people to do. Some people require medication to help the brain, and therapy can be very useful. Some people benefit from alternative things such as biofeedback. All of these treatments may need patience to see effect. Asking for help is actually a sign of strength and not one of weakness.     As for the fact that they can be completely cured i don’t think that is possible. Every person in the world has some anxiety but most have much much less than you and me. I get nervous everyday before school, i can’t sleep over at friends houses and even when i am about to do something that i love to do like going snowboarding, i get very nervous. I think it is just something that if you have problems with your anxiety, it is about coping with it. I honestly don’t think you or anyone can cure themselves but that doesn’t mean stop trying because you can definitely reduce how bad it is.

    i think out of the disorders you mentioned social anxiety is the one that can best be eradicated . the rest , like you say don’t ever really ” go away ” but with the right combination of therapy can be managed and they lessen as time progresses.

    I don’t agree. I think they can be eliminated. It’s just that you have to work hard at recovery and devloping new intersts to supplement and distract your energies so that as you recover, you devlop more positive behaviour patterns.

    Do not stop trying to sort out your problems and don’t give in. Yes, it’s a daily struggle, some days your winning, some days it is, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Don’t let setbacks discourage you.

    the fact is that most if not all of these compulsions are extreme solutions to percieved real risks/awkward situations. Everyone has their achilles heel. But wrestling with a problem and developing new postive activities is a brilliant strategy proven sucessful by generations of humans.

    Counselling really helps, when you have a good realtionship with the counsellor. proper friends can help a lot too, good support from family is important, but ultimately, even without these things you can solve your problems.
    Get advice, get support, read like mad about the problem, accept that this behaviour developed for a set of reasons and responses, examine them, evaluate them realistically and get busy with new good stuff. The reading part is very important and so is the practice part, where through trial and error, you break a habit, develop a new way of doing something.

    you may need to be very brave and take new risks, and be prepared to have loads of crappy failures on the road to success, but don’t give up. Yes, you may always be vulnerable to feeling nervous, or over emphasising risk, (but so are many people, as long as you don’t allow these things to be imn the driving seat of your life.

    You are special, the world needs your contribution, needs you to be well. So heal yourself, release yourself and step out.

    Oh and one other thing, if there is someone in your family who also has this problem, think about how that influences you. Or if they are very dogmatic/or highly strung. try and remove yourself (at least mentally) from being too influenced by them,

    These conditions can be treated with medication and therapy from your doctor. Don’t give up just keep trying the medications and therapy your doctor is giving you until you find something that helps you feel better. It takes time but, please try to be patient.
    The right medication from your doctor can take away most of the symptoms but, maybe not all.

    Based on what they tell me and what I hear, I also have an anxiety disorder. Don’t say it can’t be cured because I hope to get out of this soon. I guess we just have to have faith. I’m trying really hard to get help but I think I’m looking at the wrong places and yet I don’t know where to look. But it sucks because I feel like my life is half way over and I’m not even 18 yet.
